Walking with Longhorns

Carn Edward Longhorns setting off on the Charity Walk

16 September 2006

Following a busy summer showing cattle the Autumn and Winter months can be a time to reflect and plan for the next season.

Our passion for the breed and rural way of life, however, lead us to planning and undertaking a sponsored six mile walk with a difference.

A dozen of the Carn Edward cattle not only spent the Summer of 2006 on the Show Circuit but were also the centre attraction of a sponsored walk to raise funds for Ysgol Llanychllwydog, the Village Primary School.

The walk started at Pen Rhiw Farm going uphill to the mountain ridge on Carn Ingli Common. We followed the old Drover's Road westward to Bedd Morris from where we descended to join the road through the Gwaun Valley at the Dyffryn Arms (Bessies). A stop for refreshment allowed tourists to meet the cattle.

Accompanied now by children from the school the convoy walked along the valley road, past the school, returning the animals to their nearest grazing.

A significant amount of money was raised for the school. A few eyebrows of passers-by and tourists were also raised along the route.
