Traditionally farmed
The Carn Edward farms are typical traditional hill farms, breeding Longhorn cattle and Lleyn Welsh sheep to supply the Gardens at Penlan Uchaf and our Online shop with beef and lamb.
We are a family business with everyone taking on a busy role. Robert is the man behind the scenes, running the farms with help from the rest of the family and can also be seen showing the Longhorn cattle at Agricultural shows and behind his meat counter at local Farmer’s Markets. Over 20 years ago parents Dilwyn and Suzanne established Penlan Uchaf Gardens, which now attracts in the region of 20,000 visitors a year, whilst Robert’s brother Richard ensures the continued development of the Gardens.

High on the hills of the Gwaun Valley, the farm is approximately 500 acres and runs from the valley bottom to the hill top, providing a variety of diverse habitats. Ten years ago we decided to specialise in rearing a breed of cow which suited the hill environment in the shadow of Carn Ingli. The Longhorns were our chosen breed because they suited out environment needs, helping to maintain our diverse habitats which are rich in a variety of flora and fauna. Additionally, the cattle’s fearsome horns belie their docile temperaments which compliments the Garden visitors and many foot walkers crossing the farms. In much the same way, we chose to breed Lleyn sheep nine years ago, again because of both their temperament and suitability to the farm’s environment. The Longhorn herd stand at 200 and growing and are grass fed throughout the year and finished on home grown barley and oats. The calves are typically born in the spring, with the cattle housed on straw in our barns during the wettest parts of winter. Currently the Lleyn flock consists of approximately 600 sheep.
